Welcome to my space

Hi and welcome to my blog. I'm using this blog for the different classes I'm taking at Walden University. I'm pursuing my PhD in Educational Technology. So far, I know I will need this for at least two of my classes, EDUC 8842 - Principles of Distance Education and EDUC 8845 - Learning Theory and Distance Education. I will try to remember to mark which blogs are for which class, and which are just general or random thoughts. Feel free to comment and/or debate me on a thought. I love a good debate.

  1. Hello Grace:

Thanks for sharing. So you are a proponent of constructivism. I think this is one of the most modern theories. Siemens (2008) has outlined, based on Ermer’s and Newby’s questions that learning occurs when “meaning is created by each learner.” There are some social aspects to this kind of learning learning. I am thinking that learning is not isolated, but concepts are better grasped when there is a social connection. Looking at Ermer’s and Newby’s question, constructivism has social connotation for all, even though learning is personal and contextual.

There are many technologies, like the Internet, that will provide for contextual learning. Thurnburg (1999) has identified four learning spaces that occur on the Web. One of these is Life/Contextual learning space. This is a space which provides learners the opportunities to apply their exiting knowledge in real life situations. I believe that the Internet can provide this opportunity. For example, allow students to connect with experts in different occupations via video conferencing, e-mails, instant messing, etc, and conduct interviews on topics that they have studied or share ways in which some community problem can be solved.
